What Is Medicare?

When first introduced to Medicare it can seem a massive undertaking. We teach you about all the different parts and how which one fits your healthcare needs. We are here to make Medicare simple and easy for you to understand. So, let us start with the basics.

Understanding Medicare

Medicare, also called Original Medicare and Original-Fee-For-Services, is healthcare coverage managed by the Federal Government.

It includes:

  • Part A
  • Part B
  • You can add Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage)

You can also add a Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policy, or coverage from a former employer or union.

Things To Know About

Medicare

  • Original Healthcare is one of your health coverage options as part of Medicare.
  • You will generally have to pay a portion of the cost for each service covered by Original Medicare.
  • You will generally pay a set amount (deductible) for your health care before Medicare pays its share. Then, Medicare pays its share, and you pay your share (coinsurance/copayment).
  • There is no yearly limit to your out-of-pocket cost.
  • If you do not enroll for Medicare Part B the year you become eligible you may pay a penalty.
  • You’ll have Original Medicare unless you choose a Medicare Advantage Plan or other type of Medicare Health Plan.
